Seaforth Leads the Way in Protecting Marine Life with Expanded Fishing Tangle Bin Program

Seaforth is crucial in a major push to protect marine life and keep local waterways clean. Building on the success of the existing fishing tangle bin at Sangrado Jetty, authorities are significantly expanding the program, adding six new bins at popular fishing spots across the region.

This initiative aims to combat the growing problem of discarded fishing tackle, which seriously threatens local wildlife.

Fishing lines, hooks, and other tackle can easily injure or entangle birds and aquatic animals. Recognising this issue, the council, in partnership with OzFish and the NSW Environment Protection Authority, is making it easier for anglers to dispose of their unwanted gear responsibly.

The new bins will accept a variety of fishing waste, including:

  • Fishing line
  • Rinsed bait packaging
  • Hooks
  • Lures
  • Sinkers
  • Swivels

This program safeguards our precious marine life and ensures that popular fishing spots remain clean and safe for all visitors, including children and dogs.

The council will closely monitor the bins and conduct regular audits to gauge the program’s effectiveness and identify the types of waste being collected.

Where possible, the collected fishing waste will be recycled through the OzFish Tackle Loop program, further minimising environmental impact.

This initiative is part of the NSW Environment Protection Authority’s Waste and Sustainable Materials Strategy, funded by the waste levy.
