Seaforth Oval Plan Includes Advanced Mountain Bike Park

A new mountain bike jump park for intermediate and advanced riders is being proposed as part of a draft management plan for Seaforth Oval Reserve.

Background and Location

Local officials have prepared a draft Plan of Management (PoM) for Seaforth Oval Reserve, aiming to enhance local sport and recreation infrastructure. A central feature of the plan is a proposal for a new mountain bike jump park tailored to intermediate and advanced riders. The suggested location is on Crown land at the southeast side of Seaforth Oval, near Wakehurst Parkway.

The PoM also outlines the incorporation of 27,500 square metres of additional Crown land into the existing reserve. This update forms part of NBC’s obligations under the Crown Land Management Act 2016 and supports the broader goal of aligning with community needs.

Community Input and Previous Steps

Initial consultation occurred in September 2023, where over 500 submissions were received. Feedback highlighted a demand for upgraded recreational facilities, particularly a dedicated area for experienced mountain bike riders in the southern parts of the Northern Beaches. This led to Seaforth Oval being shortlisted due to its accessibility and suitability.

Proposed Features and Development Scope

Suggestions from the biking community included components such as tabletop jumps, berms, wooden ramps, pro-lines, warm-up zones, bike maintenance stations, and wash areas. The project would be supported through developer contributions and involve a working group of riders and club representatives to co-design the space. A volunteer program would also be established to assist with maintenance and upkeep.

Addressing Concerns and Facility Upgrades

While many respondents supported the bike park, others expressed concerns. These included potential increases in traffic and parking demand, as well as fears about noise, graffiti, and anti-social behaviour near the residential zone.

Separate from the bike facility, the draft plan also proposes upgrades to other reserve amenities. These include the sportsground, basketball court, children’s playground, walking trails, and the pavilion’s amenities. Internal traffic flow and carpark layout are also being reviewed to manage the expected impact.

Next Steps for Seaforth Oval

NBC reviewed the draft PoM for Seaforth Oval Reserve at its meeting on Tuesday, 20 May 2025. The deadline to request to address the Council on the matter closed at 5 p.m. on Monday, 19 May 2025.

Pending NBC’s decision, the next phase will involve a public exhibition of the draft PoM, expected to run from May to July 2025. Community feedback received during that period will be reviewed between August and September 2025, with a final version of the plan anticipated to return to NBC for adoption in late 2025.
